Have a struggling speller? You need to try spelling dictation to watch your child's spelling soar.
My daughter struggled with spelling until she learned to break apart words. These Science of Reading backed worksheets, help your child develop the strategy behind spelling - separating words into sounds.
Even if you're a terrible speller, you can use these worksheets. Best thing is they will work with any spelling list or phonics list you get from your child's school.
Don't have spelling list? Make sure to grab the Spelling by Sounds Word List, too.
CHILDREN LOVE THESE WORKSHEETS
- novelty is a powerful tool for your child being motivated
- you will switch out the worksheets every few weeks to match the season
- your child will enjoy coloring the worksheet when finished
- the worksheets create a boundary for the number of words and sentences which make the end point tangible for the most reluctant speller
HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
- Grab your word list or your child's spelling test.
- Select 3-5 words.
- Create a sentence with 1-2 of those words.
- Choose one worksheet for your child to write on. Use with a dry erase marker or pencil and paper.
- Dictate the first word for your child. Ask them to repeat the word. Use it in a sentence. Model how to segment the sounds in the spaces.
- Write the word on a whiteboard for your child.
- Students check your work against theirs and rewrite on the line as a whole word.
- If you opt to dictate a sentence, say the sentence to your child. Ask them to repeat. Then they write out the sentence. You write on a whiteboard and students check their work.
WHY THIS WORKS
Despite how you were taught in school, spelling and reading are intertwined.
In reading, children sound out letters. This is called decoding. In writing, children match sounds to letters. This is called encoding. Using dictation to practice spelling, your child is leveraging both reading and spelling.
